Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms living in the heart of our four legged friends. Heartworms are transmitted when a mosquito bites and infected animal and then bites your pet. These adult worms can grow up to six inches long and can eventually cause congestive heart failure. Although there is a treatment available for canine heartworm disease, it is not risk-free for the dog and can be rather expensive. There is currently no accurate test for cats. Therefore, prevention is the key to a happy and healthy pet.
We recommend starting your pet on a heartworm preventative during your first visit to us and continuing monthly. On your dogs’ first annual visit, and each yearly exam, a simple blood test will be done to ensure your pet is heartworm free. This yearly test is mandatory to purchase heartworm preventative.
